How Can You Support Your Child’s Language Development at Home?
Self Talk:
Talk, describe, and comment on whatever you are doing.
Example:
- “ I am eating”
- “Time to Eat”
Use 1-2 more words than your child.
Parallel Talk:
Talk about what your child is doing, seeing, eating, or touching.
Example:
– “You kicked the ball
Narrate your child’s actions.
Extension:
Adding more information to extend on what your child has said.
Example:
Child: “Car go”
Adult: “The blue car is going fast”
Recasting:
Repeat what your child has said in a different or more complex way.
Example:
Child: “ Want Juice”
Adult: “I want more juice please.”
Imitation:
Repeat exactly what your child has said including babbling, sounds, and words
Expansion:
Repeat what your child has said, but add to the sentence to make it grammatically correct.
Example:
Child: “Car Red”
Adult: “The car is red”
